据英国《独立报》等媒体消息，当地时间4月18日，英国广播公司（British Broadcasting Corporation，BBC）联合英国阅读机构（The Reading Agency）正式发布包含70部英联邦作家作品的长书单。入选作品按照出版时间划分，自1952年英国女王伊丽莎白二世登基起，每10年精选10部作品分别代表其在位的七个10年。其中多部作品也为中国读者所熟知。

今年是96岁的伊丽莎白二世女王登基70周年，又被称为“白金禧年”（暂译，Platinum Jubilees）。“大禧年阅读”（暂译，The Big Jubilee Read）作为系列庆典活动之一，借此回顾在其统治的70年间英联邦各国作者出版的经典书籍，以期将英国公众团结在这些足以“定义英国社会及其文化遗产的共享叙事”周围。

该书单入选作品覆盖六大洲共计31个英联邦国家，大部分为长篇小说，也包含短篇小说集《小船》（暂译，The Boat）等，以及诗集如《一个博物学家的死亡》（暂译，Death of a Naturalist），该作品是1995年诺贝尔文学奖得主谢默斯·希尼（Seamus Heaney）的第一部作品。

另有多部作品已完成影视化改编。其中，1962年英国作家安东尼·伯吉斯（Anthony Burgess）的《发条橙》（A Clockwork Orange）、1981年英裔印度作家萨尔曼·拉什迪（Salman Rushdie）的《午夜的孩子》（Midnight’s Children）都被改编为电影。加拿大作家玛格丽特·阿特伍德（Margaret Atwood）于1985年创作的反乌托邦小说《使女的故事》（The Handmaid’s Tale）则被改编成电视剧搬上荧屏。而由李安执导、改编自另一位加拿大作家扬·马特尔（Yann Martel）同名小说的《少年派的奇幻漂流》（Life of Pi）曾在第85届奥斯卡颁奖典礼上斩获四项大奖，成为一代人心中的经典。

除上述知名作品外，这份书单还包括部分鲜为人知的经典。它们既是过往时代的剪影，也与今时今日息息相关。特立尼达和多巴哥人萨姆·塞尔文（Sam Selvon）在1956年出版的《孤独的伦敦人》（暂译，The Lonely Londoners）中讲述了“疾风一代”（Windrush Generation）是如何抵达英国并逐渐适应新生活的。第二次世界大战后，英国面临严重的劳动力短缺问题。1948年《英国国籍法》赋予加勒比殖民地区居民以英国公民身份及在英定居权。同年，英国政府派出“帝国疾风号”（HMT Empire Windrush）船舰抵达牙买加，将500余名加勒比海人带回英国本土工作生活。截至1970年，已有近50万加勒比人先后移居英国。他们被称为“疾风一代”。然而，近年来，英国政坛深陷“疾风丑闻”，昔日的“英国臣民”如今面临着被驱逐出境的威胁。

“这份书单提供了一个真正挖掘各大洲故事的机会。它带领读者穿越几十年，重新走近那些我们可能从来没有读过的作品。”BBC艺术和古典音乐电视部主任苏西·克莱因（Suzy Klein）认为，女王的白金禧年是一个“绝佳的时机”，不同年龄段的读者都能借此机会分享彼此对书籍的热爱。

不过，在名单公布后，英国多家媒体注意到作家J.K.罗琳（JK Rowling）的《哈利·波特》系列（Harry Potter）未列入其中。该系列自1997年出版以来，已在全球累计销售超过5亿本。对此，伦敦玛丽女王大学现当代文学名誉教授苏希拉·纳斯塔（Susheila Nasta）表示：“1992到2001年的10年间，英联邦出版的书籍越来越多，因此我们决定为同样优秀的作品腾出空间”。同时，她称这份书单的目的是推荐读者“此前可能没有读过”的书籍。此外，在组委会看来，《哈利·波特》主要被认为是“儿童读物”。

这一回应也遭到部分人士质疑。有批评声音指出，澳大利亚作家马库斯·祖萨克（Markus Zusak）2005年出版的小说《偷书贼》（The Book Thief）也被认为是一本儿童读物，但还是入选了。在过去的两年间，罗琳因在社交平台的发言被指“伤害跨性别者的感情”而深陷争议。除《哈利·波特》外，约翰·托尔金（JRR Tolkien）的《指环王》（Lord of the Rings）以及伊恩·弗莱明（Ian Fleming）的《詹姆斯·邦德》系列（James Bond）也被排除在名单之外，两部作品均在全球售出超过1亿本书。2007年诺贝尔文学奖得主多丽丝·莱辛（Doris Lessing）的《金色笔记》（The Golden Notebook）也遗憾落选，该作品曾被评委会盛赞为“20世纪审视男女关系的巅峰之作”。
